TGIF @ Scalar Labs - 27 January 2012 - What's New with VMware Site Recovery Manager 5.0

Join Ian Forbes, Solution Architect with Scalar, as he does a technical deep dive of VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM) 5.0

VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager enhances your ability to build, manage and execute reliable disaster recovery plans for your virtual environment. With the release of version 5.0, VMware has expanded the capabilities of Site Recovery Manager to provide unprecedented levels of protection. New use cases have been made possible through the addition of the following capabilities:

  • vSphere Replication
  • Planned Migration
  • Automated Re-Protection
  • Automated Failback
  • Enhanced Dependency Definition

One of the most exciting is hypervisor based replication. This removes the requirements of having a storage array do the replication for SRM. This also provides greater storage compatibility and simplification to the deployment of SRM. Replication is done per VM instead of the storage lun allowing you to get more granular without needing to move the VM disk files.

These features  substantially increase the capabilities of SRM - even in small to midsize business environments where it had previously gained little interest due to its relatively high cost of implementation.

What is TGIF@ScalarLabs?

TGIF@ScalarLabs is an interactive monthly session for a technical audience.

By attending you will learn about how the combination of technologies can make your life easier:

  • snapshot and replication tools can increase your productivity and empower end users
  • virtualization will enable you to better serve your user and business stakeholders
  • squeeze the most performance out of the WAN bandwidth you already have
  • getting more storage bang for your buck
  • using 10GB and converged networks to reduce your cabling headache
  • getting the most out of the network you are stuck with
  • why using multiple tools for backup recovery archiving and dedupe isn't the only option
  • figuring out where your security issues are.

As a systems, networking or storage professional, you are obligated to meet rapidly increasing capacity and reliability requirements, while minimizing complexity, and simplifying management. And you must do so in a business environment where shrinking IT budgets are forcing you to do more with less.

By attending these sessions you will see how your peers are solving their toughest issues while saving time and money.
